French-registered soccer side AS Monaco have confirmed that they
will compete in the Copa EuroAmericana 2014 as part of their preseason
training schedule.
AS Monaco were only promoted to Ligue 1, the top tier of French
soccer, last season, but, supported by their free spending majority
shareholder – Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev – are looking to
quickly establish themselves amongst world soccer’s elite. The club
currently sits second in the Ligue 1 table.
They will compete alongside the likes of Altlético Madrid and
Fiorentina in the second edition of Copa EuroAmericana, which pits clubs
from Europe against their South American counterparts.
The Rouges et Blancs will become the first Ligue 1 side to tour South
America as they look to further develop their global fan base. They
will face Colombian sides Atlético Junior in Barranquilla on 20th July, and Atlético Nacional in Miami three days later.
“It is a pleasure and an interesting challenge for our team to
compete with leading international clubs. This tournament fully fits our
ambition to be a global player and attract fans from around the world,” said Vadim Vasilyev, the vice-president of AS Monaco.
