Messi has been heavily criticised as Barca have suffered a form slide over the past month.
"Messi is the number 1. He's the cornerstone of this team and we've won all we've won thanks to him; the team has played its part, but we are talking about the best player in history, and it never even entered my head that people would criticise, I can't understand it," Piqué said.
"The only answer is to keep working. Messi will be here with us for many years to come. He feels very much at home here. I'll always be able to tell my children, to Milan and any others that come along, that I was able to play alongside him."
